Running a small business is anything but a normal job. As you well know, there is a special kind of pressure that goes along with being an entrepreneur. You don't have the safety of knowing that you have a paycheck on the way if you just put in your hours, and practically every decision you make has major ramifications for the future of your livelihood.

At times, the stress may become so great that you actually envy the people who go to normal jobs. Most people work 8 to 10 hours per day and can then put work out of their minds. You, on the other hand, live your work, so you can't just go home at the end of the day and leave work behind. After a while, it can feel as if you don't have any personal time, and that's when the stress becomes really unbearable.

And the worst part about all this stress is that if you're not careful, it can affect how you go about your business. Your decision-making process may become too hasty, you may stop paying so much attention to the quality of your service, and you may end up making boneheaded mistakes.

If you want to prevent stress from wreaking havoc on both your life and your business, alleviate the problem with these suggestions.

1. Pay attention to your health: Stress can become infinitely worse when you also fail to take care of your body properly, and neglecting to stay healthy can negatively affect your ability to energetically attend to your work responsibilities. No matter how stressed you are, be sure to eat healthy meals, and don't neglect your 30 to 60 minutes of daily exercise. It's easy to let these things fall by the wayside, but they're crucial.

2. Take care of things early: When you save a task for the last minute, that task stays constantly in the back of your mind and compounds your stress level. But when you take care of the same task at the earliest possible time, you gift yourself with a clearer head and a satisfying feeling of lightness.

3. Carve out some non-work time: I understand if you feel like you have to be productive constantly-we've all been there-but believe me, if you can find some time every day to at least try to put work out of your mind, your stress level will be reduced. Even if all you do is watch TV for an hour, it's better than nothing.

4. Simplify your work area: As much as possible, try to keep your work area free of clutter, and make sure that everything you need for your business is near at hand.

5. Utilize tools that increase efficiency: We all love our high-tech gadgets these days, but we always have to be careful not to overdo it. Don't automatically go out and buy every overhyped cellphone or software package unless you are absolutely certain it will improve your productivity. Remember, more is not always better, and clutter can be killer. There are some great tools out there that can really benefit small businesses, but be selective.
